Sourdough Canyon Road and Fs 979 Loop to Mystic Lake and cabin.
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail in Montana, a heavily-used area just south of Bozeman. A large parking lot leads to a closed road that is used for hiking, biking, and cross country skiing. Bridger Ski Foundation grooms the trail in the winter for classic and skate skiing. Follows a beautiful creek. Moose, black bear and elk sightings possible. Mystic Lake Cabin can be rented for a nominal fee from the National Forest. Fun place to stay in the winter too. There are fish in the lake.
Because of the wide road and moderate incline, this hike is great year-round. Just make sure to bring micro spikes in the winter when conditions get icy.
Taking Children
This is a good hike for taking children and dogs. Be aware of mountain bikers. Since the hike is essentially along a forest service road, there is plenty of room for kids to frolic about, and in the summer, lots of opportunities to splash around in the creek if it gets too hot.
