Pyramid Mountain Trail
Overview
This is a moderate to difficult out and back trail in Alaska, which also has a long loop to it if you're up for it. The first and last 1/4 or so of the hike is probably the most difficult. The hike itself is not very long at a little over 3 miles round trip but the initial ascent can be pretty aggressive, for those who do not have great balance trekking poles are a good idea. You do not have to hike to the peak to get great views but if you do you will be able to see a panorama of the island. There is a spilt off about 1/4 of the way up if you go to the right it takes you through the old trail but it can tend to be overgrown and difficult to follow in sections. The easiest way to go is to stay left which is wider and more noticeable trail, which is somewhat kept up now.
Getting Started
To get to the trailhead from Kodiak head as if you're heading to the airport but a few hundred yard before the turn for the airport is Anton Larsen Bay Rd., if you pass the bridge you've gone too far, turn right and head a little over 5 miles the the starting point. There will be a huge parking area to the right and that's where you will see the trailhead for Pyramid Mountain.
Taking Children
This can be a difficult trail for children under 8 if you are planning to go up to the peak of Pyramid, 3/10 rating. But if you are not planning on going to the peak its a good hike that becomes more and more scenic as you go up to the base of the peak, 7/10.
