Overview
This is an out and back trail to Halapē, located on the southern seacoast of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park is one of eight backcountry campsites available for backpacking enthusiasts.
The trail map is for one way so expect 15 miles round trip.
The hike to Halapē is a grueling, hot hike through predominately non-native grasses to a small sandy beach where hikers may pitch their tents near the swaying coconut trees.
Campers may stay a maximum of 3 consecutive nights per site. A total of 16 hikers are allowed per night at Halape.
Out and back mileage is about 15 miles.
Getting Started
Begin at Mau Loa o Maunaulu at the Keauhou Trailhead located on Chain of Craters Road.
