Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail to Mauna Loa in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
Mauna Loa is an active volcano. The last recorded eruption was in 1984.
The entire hike is in wilderness area of the park.
There are pit toilets at 10,000’ located by the Pu’u Ulaula (Red Hill) cabin as well as at the summit cabin.
The view of adjacent Mauna Kea is breathtaking for much of the hike.

The trailhead begins at the end of Mauna Loa Strip Road at 6,600’
