Palikū Cabin via Halemauu Trail and Sliding Sands Trail
Overview
This is an out and back hike however camping is allowed by permit at Paliku. Go to Recreation.gov to apply for a permit. The area is so stunning and hike so long, you’ll want to stay a night or two. This hike treks through a variety of ecosystems and landscapes through the Wilderness Area at Haleakala National Park on Maui Island in Hawaii.
About half way in, you’ll hike past Kapalaoa cabin where there’s a pit toilet.
Look for the rare silverswords flowering and the native Nene geese.
This hike is completely exposed. Have plenty of water, snacks, foul weather gear, navigational tools, and lights if you begin after noon. Only bathrooms are at the trailhead and cabins. Bring a WAG bag and pack out what you pack in.
Getting Started
Begin at Keonehe’ehe’e (Sliding Sands) Trailhead at the summit of Haleakala National Park.
