Hōlua Cabin via Halemau'u Trail
Overview
This is a moderate out and back trail to Holua Cabin at Haleakala National Park on Maui Island in Hawai’i.
The hike begins in a native shrub land ecosystem. About two miles in, the trail narrows, steepens and becomes a series of switchbacks dropping down to the floor of the crater. Prepare yourself for misting clouds and spectacular views.
The trail name, Halema’u translates to ama’u fern house. These native ferns are found along the trail and really enhance the uniqueness of this hike.
The turnaround is Holua cabin and it’s a special place to snack and refuel for the trek back. Be sure to look for (but not feed) the native nene geese that frequent the area.
Getting Started
Begin this hike at Halema'u trailhead parking lot which is on the left just past the backpacker pickup on the right. Bring plenty of water, snacks, first aid, navigational tools, and a flashlight.
