The loop trail begins at a gate at the end of Ma’akua Rd just off of route 83. There is no parking in the immediate area of the trailhead and the neighbors suggest that you park at the Hau’ula Beach Park located on route 83. It’s only .33 of a mile walk from there to the gate. Once passing the gate you’ll walk up a paved road and enter the Forest Reserve. After a short walk the trailhead sign, for Hau’ula Loop, will be located on your right and the trailhead sign for Ma’akua Ridge Trail is located directly opposite the Hau’ula Loop sign. Upon reaching the loop section of the trail you’ll be confronted with a decision, left or right. Which do you do? If you chose right the route will be steeper at the beginning. If you chose left the grade is less and the trail is covered with Pine needles. Which do your knees prefer? The trail winds through a forest of Pine and Eucalyptus trees. There are a lot of exposed roots and rocks to traverse, but there are also portions covered with Pine needles. The trail is suitable for persons of all ages as long as they can hike a distance of 3.5 miles with an elevation change of 700 feet. Views of the gulch and the ocean are highlights as are the birds singing. Portions of the trail can be muddy, especially after a rain. This is a good trail if you’re looking for something to do on the North Shore in the area of La’ie. Enjoy!
