Doudy Draw Trail Loop
Overview
About half-two thirds of this route is in the open with little or no shade, so if it's very sunny and hot be prepared. There is no potable water source on the hike, so carry your own.
The first part of the hike (on Flatirons Vista trail) is maintained gravel and gains elevation to the top of the mesa and provides good views to the north into Boulder valley. Once at the top, take the Dowdy Draw trail down the backside of the mesa into the valley below. The trail here is rocky and has some sparse shade, and the views are very nice. Coming out of the draw, you "side hill" a bit (this part can get very muddy and slick after rain) up to the intersection with Spring Brook South. Take this trail west across an open area before climbing into the forest for the loop. This loop is nice and shady, and the trail surface is a nice mix of rocks, roots, and pine needles. Once you complete the loop you are back at the intersection with Dowdy Draw and retrace your steps.
This is a good route for trail running as well. It tends to be quiet in the mornings, and is especially nice during the winter months. Be aware that Dowdy Draw will be closed to access when it is muddy. Check https://www.bouldercounty.org/open-space/parks-and-trails/trail-conditions/ for current conditions.
Getting Started
Park at the parking area off Highway 93 just south of the intersection with CO 128. There is ample parking, but it can get busy during the high season in the summer, so go early during those times.
Taking Children
Due to the length and some of the ascents/descents, this would be a tough hike for those with little legs.
