Handies Peak via American Basin Road
Overview
This difficult out-and-back trail passes Sloan Lake on its way to the summit of Handies Peak in Handies Peak Wilderness Study Area. At 14,058 feet, Handies Peak is one of the Colorado 14ers in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
Assuming a start at American Basin Trailhead, roughly the first 1.5 miles will bring you to Sloan Lake. From here, it is only another mile to the summit. The whole trail is very steep and rocky.
Getting Started
The trailhead is located roughly 23 miles on Cinnamon Pass Road from Lake City. It is advised to take a high clearance, 4WD vehicle, as the last mile to the trailhead is especially difficult. Additionally, hikers can also park at the American Basin Road turn off, which would add about 0.8 miles each way. This area is very remote and primitive, so be sure to arrive prepared.
Taking Children
Taking children is recommended only with stern caution. The mileage isn’t as much as other nearby 14ers, however the trail is still extremely steep and rocky. The hike is also very remote, which is another factor to consider when bringing children.
