Portola State Park - Coyote Ridge / Shingle Mill Trails
A nice quiet trail which takes you through a variety of woods and scenery. The redwoods are mostly in small groves and pockets with the majority of the hike featuring Douglas fir, tanoak, and mix-specie forests. On Coyote Ridge Trail, there are a few overlooks which are picturesque of the valley and Butano Ridge to the south and Skyline Ridge to the north. Shingle Mill Trail is wide and gently descends through thick forests and around ½ way along the trail is a huge redwood that is a must for pictures and selifes. Closer to the Tarwater Trail Camp junction is a beautiful grove of second growth redwoods which to me is one of the highlights of the trail. Pomponio Trail completes the loop which is thick with huckleberry and back into more of the larger redwoods.
