Overview

This is a moderate loop hike that takes you to a nice view spot at Slate Rock, and then up to Buck Springs Lodge along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The return trip leads over Little Bald Mountain before a steep descent and some nice views from the rock outcrops of Pilot Rock.

You'll start on the Pilot Rock Trail, but you will soon take a right turn onto a well-traveled user trail that will connect you over to Pilot Cove Trail. From there, you will connect a series of official trails to make your way to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You will stay on the Pilot Rock Trail for the entire return trip.

This trail goes by Pilot Rock.

Getting Started

The trailhead is located on Yellowgap Road in the Pisgah Ranger District. This gravel road is affected by seasonal closures, and can have large potholes at times. Check the Pisgah NF web site for road closures, and low clearance vehicles should drive with caution.

Taking Children

This hike has a few steep sections that may not be appropriate for children.

Led this hike for a group on 10/17, and the weather was perfect. The colors near the parkway were pretty, but appeared to be a little past peak. We did have 1 experienced hiker injure an ankle coming down Pilot Rock Trail.
