We took the counter-clockwise route, starting at the Elk Mountain Campground and summiting Elk Mountain first. The route up to Elk Mountain is pretty tough, but then levels out after you descend on the route to Kings Mountain. At the time of writing, the soil was pretty loose in parts on the way to Kings Mountain. As others have noted, pack a lot of water, as only one of the creeks on the way back to our starting point was flowing to filter water. It took us about 5 1/2 hours at a moderate pace.

Pretty good views once you get up there. Fairly rough trails though - it's a knee-buster. Great for conditioning. Overall it's a good hike with nothing spectacular or poor about it, so 3 stars.

Great hike to stay in shape. Pack water as there aren't many places to filter water. There are a few areas where there is some exposure but safe hike overall. Start early as a lot of people will just to an out and back up to King's.

Elk Mountain - Kings Mountain - Wilson River trail loop
Beautiful day for a hike. It was warm.....hot when not in the cover of the trees. Very steep going up Elk Mountain and down Kings Mountain. Ensure you are up for the challenge (fit and mentally prepared) prior to venturing on this hike. There are numerous places that you need to scramble up or down. I had to help my German Shepherd cross on a few occasions.

Elk creek yo king mountain loop
Some good waterless campspots along the trail. Steep:1600 in 1st mile (approx) gets the heart pumping up Elk Trail, then some scrambly/skiddy downhill followed by up Kingmbt to kill you off!! Those time was with a 20lb pack for training purposes.
