East Zigzag Mountain via Burnt Lake Trail #772
Overview
This is a fabulous, popular and difficult out and back trail past Burnt Lake and up East Zigzag Mountain in Mount Hood National Forest.
This trail goes by beautiful Burnt Lake with views of Mt Hood. Camping is allowed in designated spots only and the campsites fill up fast on summer weekends. Hikers swim, fish and capture crawfish at Burnt Lake.
The trail continues to East Zigzag Mountain with views of Mt Hood and on clear days Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Jefferson. The best views are along the ridge leading up to the peak or beyond the peak as trees block the view at the top. At the top of East Zigzag there are a few small remains from the former fire lookout.
Getting Started
Follow the Mt Hood National Forest Service driving directions to the North Burnt Lake Trailhead.
The last mile or so of the drive is along a potholed gravel road. The trailhead is obvious as the road ends at the trailhead. Given the popularity of this hike arrive early on summer weekends and please park perpendicular. In Sept. 2021 there was a port-a-potty at the trailhead.
Taking Children
This is a tough hike for small children given the elevation gain.
This is an alternate route for Burnt Lake.
