Overview

Bennett Pass Road 3550 offers a scenic snowshoe or cross-country ski outing in the winter. The route has several viewpoints of Mt Hood and a view south toward Mt Jefferson. The route follows a ridgeline along a wide road except at the Terrible Traverse, ~2.4 miles from Bennett Snopark. The Terrible Traverse is a one-lane section of road next to a steep rock wall, causing a steep slope of snow during winter next to a steep drop to the valley below. Best to be aware of avalanche conditions. Microspikes might be helpful when icy. Or, turn around here.
After the Terrible Traverse, the trail climbs, but gradually. At 3.5 miles, slightly off-road to the NE is a good spot for a break or turnaround point. This opening is at the junction with FR3540-641, overlooking Pocket Creek. The hike continues on to the Gunsight Trailhead and junction with FR4891, although skiers and snowshoers could continue further along either road.
Snowmobiles also access Bennett Pass Snopark and FR3550.

Getting Started

Park at Bennett Pass Snopark, which is relatively small given it provides access for skiers/snowshoers, winter play fun, and snowmobiles. Note the forest service mentions the parking lot grade is 5% and vehicles can slide when the lot is icy.
The snopark is along Highway 35, 6.4 miles NE of the junction with Highway 26. Mt Hood Meadows workers may force a roundabout path to the snopark as they control traffic to the ski area. A snopark pass is required. There is a outhouse at the snopark.

Taking Children

Not advisable to cross the Terrible Traverse with children, but the first 2.4 miles is great for children.
