Hager Mountain Lookout via 160 Trail
Overview
Hager Mountain Lookout in Fremont-Winema National Forest is a year-round destination reservable on recreation.gov in the winter and early spring. The out-and-back trail climbs nearly 2000 ft over 3.8 miles through Ponderosa Pine forest to the lookout with panoramic views. Located south of Silver Lake in a remote part of Oregon the trail is seldom busy.
Getting Started
Drive west on Highway 31 from Silver Lake and then south on East Bay Road, which comes FR28, for 9 miles. Park in a pullout on the east side of FR28. There is space for ~8 vehicles. There are no facilities. The trailhead and trail are both well marked, the trail with blue diamonds.
Taking Children
Inappropriate for young children due to length and elevation gain, especially in winter, when the trail can be icy.
