Paugussett Forest walk or the Lillinonah trail is a loop or A-A type of walk, with a total of 572’ (174m) in total elevation and a complete loop is 5.25 miles long.
The blue route is well marked and in some places, well worn. There are patches of mud and marsh at points, so I would advise wearing boots or be prepared for cold wet feet.
I did this walk in mid March and there were few surprises. I would caution though that the muddy hills can be slick, even with trail runners or boots, watch your step please. If the weather is damp I would walk the route clockwise.
After reaching the end of the first 1/3rd, walking through gentle undulating landscape, you’ll descend to where a tributary and also noise becomes apparent. The next 1/3 is walking along the banks of this tributary and eventually be presented with a serene scene where it joins Lillinonah Lake aka Housitonic River. The final leg sees a climb up and away from the banks, past an interesting grilling place (with grill), and back to the parking lot.
Kid friendly, although strollers would be a bad idea and my time reflects an extra 15lbs of weighted rucsac on my back.
