Cathedral Lake via Mount Tallac Trailhead
Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail to Cathedral Lake in Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. (Please see additional information about difficulty level below... it isn't really overly difficult).
This trail goes by Floating Island Lake.
Please note that the information about the distance, altitude, and difficulty shown above is based on a person hiking a distance BEYOND Cathedral Lake from the Trailhead. The actual one-way distance from the trailhead to Cathedral Lake is 2.52 miles (or a little over 5 miles round trip). The difficulty level on the trail up to Cathedral Lake is at the upper end of an easy rating. The trail becomes more difficult only AFTER you walk past Cathedral Lake up to the base of Mount Tallac. (Note that most people I have encountered typically hike from the trailhead to Cathedral Lake and back, thereby keeping the difficulty level of easy.) Using my GAIA GPS system I determined an altitude change of 1,112 feet along the trail from the trailhead to Cathedral Lake. There are beautiful views of Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe along the middle third of the trail on the way up to Cathedral Lake. I suggest that you do not be frightened by the "difficult" rating, which (in my opinion) is only encountered after you have passed Cathedral Lake.
