Hawksbill Mountain in Linville Gorge (East Rim)
Overview
This extremely popular hike is a moderate out and back trail to Hawksbill Mountain in the Linville Gorge Wilderness. It is popular for a good reason, since the summit offers jaw-dropping views that are some of the best in Linville Gorge. At the top, there are options to go both left and right, so try them both! If you go to the left, you'll get unparalleled views of Table Rock Mtn and the Southern Gorge, while going right takes you to the sheer cliff drop below Hawksbille, as well as views of Jonas Ridge and the Northern Gorge.
The trail up Hawksbill is very clear and well-maintained by volunteer crews. It is steep and rocky in a few spots, and trail crews have done a great deal of work to improve the trail.
Getting Started
This trail begins at the Hawksbill Trailhead on Table Rock Road. This spot can be extremely popular and crowded at time, due to the beautiful hike and the rare camping sites across the road from the trailhead. Note that Table Rock Road can be difficult for low clearance vehicles at times, due to mud ruts and potholes.
Taking Children
Great hike for children! Make sure you watch them closely at steep drop-offs.
