Overview
This is a moderate loop hike in the Cataloochee section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail goes through extensive old growth forest and former farmland with stone walls and cellar holes. It is particularly beautiful in spring and fall. Numerous crossings of Caldwell Fork are unbridged and may be hazardous in high water.
Getting Started
The trail begins just beyond the entrance to Cataloochee Campground. There is room for 6-8 cars. It may be necessary to park beyond the trailhead and walk back to the start.
Taking Children
This hike was traditionally good for older children. With several bridges missing, knee-deep fords are required in swift water. They may be difficult or hazardous, therefore it is now rated a 5.
