Overview
This is a difficult loop trail up to and along the ridgeline around the Avery Creek Basin.
This trail goes by Black Mountain, Clawhammer Mountain, Rich Mountain, and Coontree Mountain.
The trail starts out with steep climbing for the first 3 1/2 miles. After that, the rest of the hike is moderate, with ups and downs along the ridgeline.
At about the midpoint of the hike you'll pass the Buckhorn Gap Shelter, which is a convenient place to stop for lunch.
Getting Started
The hike begins at the Pressley Cove Trailhead on Avery Creek Rd. Parking is very limited, with space for only 4-6 cars.
Taking Children
This would be a difficult hike for children, but there are many shorter route options in the area that would be more suitable.
