Grass Mountain via Pacific Crest Trail (San Francisquito to Lake Hughes Road)
Overview
This is a moderate section of the Pacific Crest Trail in Angeles National Forest, starting at San Francisquito Valley Road (PCT mile 478.2) and ending at Lake Hughes Road (PCT mile 485.8) for a total of 7.6 miles.
Hiking north, the trail begins with just under 2 miles of elevation gain (around 900 feet) from San Francisquito Valley Road to Grass Mountain Road, before slowly descending over the remaining distance. If hiking south, expect 6 miles of gentle elevation gain from Lake Hughes Road before dropping back down to San Francisquito Valley Road.
Trail junctions are clearly marked with PCT signage and occasionally rock features, but pay attention at Forest Service road crossings. This trail goes by Grass Mountain and Clear Spring.
Getting Started
There is on-street parking at both San Franscisqutio Road and Lake Hughes Road, as well as a small parking lot at the Green Valley Fire Station, where water is typically available. Shuttling vehicles is easy via Elizabeth Lake Road to make this a one-way hike.
Due to the Station Fire, most of this trail is fairly exposed. Expect to drink more water than normal, prepare for excess sun, and if hiking in the summer, start early in the morning.
Taking Children
Most sections of this trail are suitable for all ages, except for a short section between South Portal Road and Leona Divide Fire Road with a steep drop-off on the downhill side and narrow (approx. 1-2 feet) trail width. Keep children close during this section.
