Thompson Peak Trail #629
Distance Round Trip 5 miles
Trailhead Elevation 8,840 ft.
Average RT Time 3 hours.
Thompson Peak Trail courses along the West Fork of the Black River and transverses some of the most beautiful landscapes that Arizona has to offer. The trail begins atop the old railroad grade and enters a narrow canyon. You will pass two fish barriers (keeps native fish in the river) and you can continue hiking the old railroad grade or take the trail that traverses along the river. This river is not stocked, catch & release only and is full of native apache trout. If you do plan on fly fishing, I recommend a larger hopper with a nymph dropper. When you come to the end of the trail you can either retrace your steps or cross the river onto #628. If you continue, you will reach FR 68 in approximately 3 more miles.
