Overview

This is a moderate one way trail to Sugarloaf Peak in Cleveland National Forest.

This trail goes by Old Sugarloaf Peak.

The trail is a popular hiking and biking trail and well graded, hence the moderate rating. The views are amazing, alternating from ocean views to expansive views of the Santa Ana Mountains as the trail goes higher and higher on the ridge. The trail is exposed which makes it hot in the summer months. Bring approrpriate protection and water. The trail is often ridden (and hiked) by shuttling up to Blue Jay Campground and then hiking generally downhill.

Getting Started

Take the I5 to San June Capistrano, then go east on Hwy 74. After passing Caspar's Wilderness Park, you'll come up on a forest service fire station that also has a sign for the Lazy W Camp. Turn down that road and drive down for about 1 mile (roughly) when you'll see a sign for the San Juan Trail and a parking lot on the left. The trailhead, pointed out by the sign, is on the right.

Taking Children

This is a long uphill trail that has amazing views and a moderate grade. Bicycles frequent this trail, so be aware and let them know of your presence as hikers have the right-of-way.

Nice hike, went on a Friday and saw one other hiker, and about 8 mountain bikers and 3 snakes. My Garmin said 13.3 miles and 2,800 feet elevation gain. Some scrambling to the top of the peak.

4/27/19. Wonderful hike up to Sugarloaf. Nice overcast in the morning and got hotter as the marine layer burned off. We were treated to great views of all the local mountains. There are two Sugarloafs, you first see two rock cairns denoting the trail to Old Sugarloaf which looks pretty demanding. If you continue about 1 more mile, you get to New Sugarload which is a much easier hike up. I've done the latter and am looking forward to the former another day. Watch out for bikes which use this for a downhill bomb from Blue Jay. Round trip is about 12.6 miles.
