White Sands Loop via Alkali Flat Trail
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail into the heart of the white dunes of White Sands National Park. The "trail" is entirely on sand and is marked by orange posts stuck on the dunes. Walking gypsum sand is relatively easy, but climbing up and down steep dunes make this a moderate hike. If you are so inclined, the trip can be made barefoot--the white sand does feel good on your feet. The posts are easy to follow and lead across the dunes to the edge of the dry lakebed of Lake Lucero, the source of the white sand. Note that this hike has no shade and should not be done at the height of summer except early in the morning; spring and fall are the best times to explore the heart of the dunes. Take plenty of water and lather on the sunscreen.
Getting Started
Access is easy on the only road that enters the park. Most of the road is paved, but the last mile or so is on hard-packed sand that is easy to drive on for any vehicle. Head to the Heart of the Dunes at the end of the road and you'll find the well-marked trailhead.
