AZ-flg-Kendrick-Lookout-9.5 mi, up 2600'
Kendrick Peak Lookout hike in the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness, up to 10,418'. One climbs 2600'. Round-trip distance is 9.5 miles, producing an ERM (Energy Required Miles) of 19.9 (difficult). The historic lookout cabin in the saddle just prior to the peak was built in 1912. The lookout had to ride or hike to the peak to search for fire sign. The CCC built another lookout, which was later replaced by the current tower in 1964. It is an operational tower and contains the venerable Osborne Fire Finder. The hike begins on a closed resupply road that becomes a trail at about the 2 mile mark. It's a wonderful well-graded trail with views to Government Prairie (South) and Humphreys Peak (East). A Yuge fire charred the area in 2000 and a smaller blaze toasted a few more trees in 2018. This last blaze caused little damage, burning through some of the old fire scar. Happily, this trail is in the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness, so you won't be assaulted by discourteous mountain bikers. The WV has lots of (noncommecial !) reports ----> http://wildernessvagabond.com/index.html
