Overview

This is a moderate out and back trail to Sierra Buttes in Tahoe National Forest.

This is a pleasant hike to the old Sierra Butte Fire lookout. The hike gains a far amount of elevation near the top and could be difficult for the novice hike. The last push to the top of the fire lookout is the hardest part. Experienced hikes will find in fairly moderate in difficulty. The view from the top makes the trip worthwhile with a spectacular vistas of the northern Sierras.

This trail has views of Tamarack Lakes and Young America Lake.

Getting Started

Access to the trailhead is on a dirt forest service road. The average SUV will have no difficulty getting there in dry conditions. When the road is wet it is not advisable to drive the access road.

This trail is open to mtn bikes so hikers should use caution and be on the lookout. Summer is a popular time and parking near the trailhead can be challenging on the weekends.

Sierra Buttes fire lookout
Great views from the top of the overlook, but there were tons of flies up there. Not many people, but tons of flies.
