Wahkeena & Multnomah Falls Loop
Overview
This loop trail offers a paradise for waterfall enthusiasts, featuring six officially named waterfalls and numerous cascades along the way. The hike can be done in either direction, starting from either trailhead.
Beginning at Multnomah Falls, the loop follows a clockwise route. It starts with a paved path to the Benson Bridge, offering a picturesque view of the lower and main tiers of Multnomah Falls. The trail then ascends steeply through 11 switchbacks to a ridgecrest, providing views of Multnomah Falls and the Columbia River. The trail continues to the Multnomah Falls Viewpoint, descending to the Multnomah Falls Upper Viewpoint where the uppermost tier of the falls can be observed.
Afterward, the trail crosses Multnomah Creek and passes several waterfalls, including Dutchman Falls, Wiesendanger Falls, and Ecola Falls. It then reaches a junction with the Wahkeena Trail and proceeds uphill, offering views of the Columbia River. The Wahkeena-Angels Rest Trail Junction leads to a side trip to Wahkeena Spring, known for its impressive flow.
Returning to the main trail, several switchbacks lead down to Fairy Falls and Wahkeena Canyon. Lemmons Viewpoint provides panoramic vistas before the trail descends in stone-walled switchbacks to the stone bridge in front of Wahkeena Falls. From there, it follows the Return Trail #442, passing under Douglas-firs and big-leaf maples, and eventually reaching the old highway near Multnomah Falls Lodge.
It's important to note that the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire affected a significant portion of the trail, resulting in burned areas and impacted vegetation. Additionally, there are diversions along the trail to various viewpoints and landmarks, such as the Multnomah Falls Upper Viewpoint, Wahkeena Spring, and Lemmons Viewpoint.
