Overview

Baldy Mountain is a difficult out and back trail in the Yakima River Canyon south of Ellensburg. The name of the game is up! From the moment you hit this trail you’re going to be climbing. If you love to challenge yourself, or want a conditioning hike in the colder winter months, this is your hike! Keep an eye out for Big-horn sheep and Bald Eagles. Watch out for old downed barb wire fences, especially when hiking with kids or pets.

Getting Started

Park at the Big Pines recreation area. You will need to pay a day use fee or hang an interagency pass (America the Beautiful Pass). Discover Passes and Forest Passes do not work at this site! Cross the road and head north back toward the trailhead. There will be a gate in the fence. From here you can either climb straight up a shortcut to the right, or take the slightly more gradual trail the loops around to the left.

Taking Children

This is a challenging hike for anyone.
