Chinidere Mountain Loop via Pacific Crest Trail
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail to Chinidere Mountain in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
The trail starts by descending from the Wahtum Lake Camground at the Wahtum Lake Trailhead. The trail reaches the shore of Wahtum Lake where you will turn left. Cross the lake outlet on logs, then climb up the slope to a junction with the PCT. Turn left then almost immediately turn right for the final ascent to the summit of Chinidere Mountain.
A former fire lookout site, Chinidere Mountain has sweeping 360-degree views that include Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams. The burn scar from the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire is also visible. The broad rocky summit has plenty of room for hikers to spread out and take a break.
Descend back down to the PCT and turn left, passing the trail you ascended earlier. Follow the PCT as it loops around the lake back to the spot just down the hill from the trailhead.
Getting Started
The trailhead is also a campground. There is a small parking area set aside for hikers. A toilet is available. Look for the start of the trail next to the signboards, heading down the hill to the lake.
Taking Children
This is harder hike for younger kids. There's a lot of elevation gain in a relatively short distance.
