Pinnacle Ridge Trail #630
Overview
This Mount Hood National Forest Wilderness trail is an out-and-back route (with Gaia GPS mileage calculated for one way) leading to the Timberline Trail. Alternatively, you can loop back via the Elk Cove Trail, connected by a short but challenging bushwhack or a 1.8-mile road walk.
There are several excellent side hikes to explore, including Dollar Lake, Barrett Spur, Elk Cove, and Cairn Basin. While there are many nearby campsites, be prepared for crowded conditions during the summer, especially on weekends.
As you hike, you’ll traverse the 2011 Dollar Lake fire area, which has transformed into vibrant fields of wildflowers in summer and a haven for juicy huckleberries in early fall. Expect downed trees across the trail and boggy sections in Pinnacle Meadows.
For the adventurous, the Pinnacle—a striking volcanic rock formation—can be accessed via a brief bushwhack.
Getting Started
The Pinnacle Ridge Trailhead is at the end of Laurance Lake Road, NF-2840. There is a large parking lot/turnaround area. The trailhead is signed. There are no facilities.
Taking Children
Good hike for older children depending on their endurance for the elevation gain.
