Bald Mountain via Pacific Crest Trail
Overview
This is a moderate out and back trail to Bald Mountain in Mount Hood National Forest. This trail starts at Lolo Pass or for a shorter hike at the Top Spur trailhead
The hike is through forest with huckleberry and rhododendron bushes. As it follows the Pacific Crest Trail, the trail grade is never too steep and is well maintained. After passing the junction with the Top Spur trail, there is a confusing junction with no clear directions to Bald Mountain. Follow the middle trail signed Timberline/Muddy Fork. Shortly a large spur trail to the left leads to Bald Mtn. with fantastic views on a clear day.
The Gaia USFS Visitor map shows the trail up to Bald Mtn.
Getting Started
At Lolo Pass look for the Pacific Crest Trail signs. Parking is along the road or just pass the PCT sign turn right (coming from Zigzag) at the sign to Lost Lake. Just after the turn there is a parking area on the right for about 5 cars.
Lolo Pass Road is fine for passenger cars, at least from Zigzag to Lolo Pass in October 2019.
Taking Children
The trail is fine for children, other than the very steep drop-off at the viewpoint at the top of Bald Mountain. For a shorter hike start at the Top Spur trailhead.
