Coffin Mountain
Overview
This is a moderate out-and-back trail to Coffin Mountain in the Willamette National Forest. The trail starts out with a steep climb up an old road bed. Then it switchbacks up the slope where wildflowers such as paintbrush and bluehead gilia bloom in June. Then the trail traverses a huge south-facing meadow. This meadow is full of beargrass blooms every few years (beargrass doesn't bloom every year). The trail heads back into the trees, then ends at the summit of Coffin Mountain where a 1984 fire lookout is staffed during fire season. Views are excellent and include Mt. Jefferson to the east.
Getting Started
From Highway 22 turn west onto paved Straight Creek Rd (Road 11). Drive 4 miles and turn right onto gravel Road 1168. Drive 3.8 miles, and then turn left onto Road 450 and park at the trailhead on your right.
Taking Children
This short hike is suitable for older children who are up for the climb. Keep an eye on them at the summit as there are a few steep drop-offs.
