Overview

This is a difficult out and back trail in MatthewWinters Park, offering a great workout and less crowds. Mt. Morrison is the peak right behind Red Rocks Amphitheatre. There are great views of Red Rocks as well as many surrounding peaks. Whoever constructed the trail did not believe in switchbacks; the trail starts off climbing steeply right away and generally goes straight uphill. The trail is very obvious and easy to follow most of the way. The final section to the summit is a bit of a scramble (fun but nothing too exposed, maybe class 2). There is isn't much shade on the trail, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection. The descent can be challenging due to the steepness and loose sand/gravel. Footwear with good traction/ankle support is recommended, and hiking poles can be very helpful for the descent.

This trail goes by Red Rocks Park.

Getting Started

The trailhead is located on the left just after entering Red Rocks Entrance #4 from Morrison. You can park along the side of the road.

Low - moderate traffic on narrow one and back path. Nice views. Great spot to see Red Rock Amphitheater. First half with steep, rocky incline is more draining going down than going up surprisingly. Boulder climbing to the summit using the path on the right is the more comfortable choice.

Totally kicked my butt. Needed a few days to recover, but it was really beautiful and I’m super happy I made it all the way to the top (even though there was a moment of panic at one of the upper scrambles).

Hiked on Sunday October 4, 2020. First time hiking this trail, definitely very challenging and a great workout. Temperatures were in low 70s, but most of the hike is exposed to the sun and it felt hotter. Not too crowded even on a Sunday. Great views and fun little scrambling section at the top. I thought going down was harder, the trail is steep and composed of loose sand/gravel in many sections (plus my legs were fatigued from the climb up), which led to a few slips/slides/falls. Hiking poles were very helpful on the way down.
