Street & Nye Mountains
Overview
This hike is a well-trafficked, moderately strenuous-to-difficult out and back hike to Street Mountain and Nye Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness in Adirondack Park.
Street and Nye Mtns. are considered trailless peaks, thus the trails are not maintained and unmarked. However, the paths are generally well-defined, and several cairns are placed along the way.
Getting Started
Fee-based parking is available at the Adirondack Loj & Heart Lake Program Center on Adirondack Loj Rd. in Lake Placid, NY. Typically, the parking lot fills early and quickly. There is parking along one side of Adirondack Loj Rd., as well, which requires a road walk to and from the trailhead.
Begin by heading to the trailhead for Mt. Jo. Heart Lake will be on your left. Where the trail diverges, bear left (away from Mt. Jo), and then follow the Old Nye Ski Trail and herd paths.
There are six water crossings on this hike. Most crossings are narrow, but the water crossing of Indian Brook is wide. Indian Brook and perhaps other water crossings may be difficult, dangerous, or impassable in high water.
