Overview

This hike is a well-trafficked, moderately strenuous-to-difficult out and back hike to Street Mountain and Nye Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness in Adirondack Park.

Street and Nye Mtns. are considered trailless peaks, thus the trails are not maintained and unmarked. However, the paths are generally well-defined, and several cairns are placed along the way.

Getting Started

Fee-based parking is available at the Adirondack Loj & Heart Lake Program Center on Adirondack Loj Rd. in Lake Placid, NY. Typically, the parking lot fills early and quickly. There is parking along one side of Adirondack Loj Rd., as well, which requires a road walk to and from the trailhead.

Begin by heading to the trailhead for Mt. Jo. Heart Lake will be on your left. Where the trail diverges, bear left (away from Mt. Jo), and then follow the Old Nye Ski Trail and herd paths.

There are six water crossings on this hike. Most crossings are narrow, but the water crossing of Indian Brook is wide. Indian Brook and perhaps other water crossings may be difficult, dangerous, or impassable in high water.

Hiked: Saturday Sept 21, weather was clear and high 60’s. With all the hype of stream crossings and blowdowns all over, they both turned out to be non factors. Trail was easy to follow, but may get trickier as leaves fall. Passed about 30 hikers coming up as I was on my way down. Tried to tell all to not forget to seek the stunning view from Street. Just past the Street summit sign and left on an obvious path, you walk less than 100 feet and there's a boulder to climb on that gives a fabulous vantage point of Wright, Marshall, and many other fabulous panorama High Peaks views. Some say it's not worth it if you're not going after your 46r, I disagree. It’s a moderate hike if you're in decent shape and have some basic trail-finding skills. Though Nye doesn't have a view, Street does. Enjoy!!

Great hike, easy to follow trails even though it’s unmarked. Lots of mud, very small patches of ice. Had spikes, but never took them out. The stream crossing weren’t bad, just need to be patient and find a good crossing.

This is a nice hike. The unmarked trail is easy to follow, diverse, never steep and all around very pleasant.

Street and Nye (ADK 22/46 and ADK 23/46) (10/13/19, 6:38:54AM)
Second hike of the weekend (hiked Phelps and Tabletop the day before). Hit the trail early when it was still dark (stayed in bunkhouse the night before). Was the first one to register at the trailhead for the day. Had both summits to myself and only came across a handful of people. Mostly an unmaintained trail on the way up and then a herd path to each summit. Both summits were mostly wooded with limited or no views. Ascent wasn’t too bad, but the unmaintained trail and water crossings slowed pace a bit. Trial kept it interesting with different sections. Made really great time down from Street and made it to NYE very quickly from trail split. Move well through that section. Nice fall day and great way to end the hiking season!
