Deep Creek Loop via Indian Creek Falls
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail to Indian Creek Falls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is very popular during the warmer months, during which the first 0.7 miles will be shared with multitudes of families tubing on Deep Creek.
This trail goes by Juney Whank Falls, Toms Branch Falls, and Indian Creek Falls. Several old home sites are also visible along the route. It is scenic in March and April when spring flowers are blooming.
Getting Started
From Bryson City, NC follow prominent signs for the Deep Creek Campground area of the Park. Do not turn right into the picnic and campground areas but continue straight until the road ends at a turnaround and gate. Deep Creek Trail starts beyond the gate. Parking is at a premium on summer and fall weekends so an early arrival is recommended.
Taking Children
The hike is popular with children and can be done by families. Much of the trail follows old roads, and the only significant climb is over Sunkota Ridge above Indian Creek Falls. If this proves too challenging an out-and-back hike to the falls is rewarding in itself. In warmer weather children will enjoy wading in Deep Creek closer to the parking area. Watch out for smaller children since currents can be swift.
