Dawson Butte Trail Loop
Overview
This is a easy loop trail a short distance from Castle Rock. Offers an alternative to unshaded hikes in and around Castle Rock.
Horses and mountain bikes share the trail with hikers.
The terrain is varied with sunny prairie, and shaded woods. The low spot is at the halfway point, so it's downhill going out, and uphill on the return with only a 300' ascent and descent.
The trail is mostly sandy soil that gets deep in a couple spots, but is fairly solid for most of the hike.
Getting Started
Take the West Frontage Road off I-25 at Exit 174 (Northbound) or Exit 181 (Southbound) to Tomah Road. Head West on Tomah Road for 1.6 miles to the parking area and trailhead. Watch for the herd of American Bison in the fields South of Tomah Road.
There is ample parking for vehicles, and for horse trailers, and it is a no-fee area.
The trailhead has a couple of picnic tables, and an outhouse with paper supplies, and trash cans for refuse and dog droppings.
Taking Children
Lots of kids and dogs on this trail. There are log benches along the way and a picnic area around the halfway point. There are also a couple short cuts and loop back option if you don't want to go the full 4.9 miles.
