WB moderate Big Devils Stairs hike Sun11Aug2024
Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail to Range View Overlook in Shenandoah National Park.
This is one of the most difficult seven miles I have hiked, with a steep descent into the gorge, and difficult climb back out. That said, the views from the overlook were absolutely breathtaking. We stopped at the bottom of the gorge for lunch and it was a beautiful place for a rest next to the river.
Getting Started
Parking is just off Skyline Drive. It is a small lot and easy to miss. You will want to start along the Appalachian Trail for a few hundred yards before it branches off.
Taking Children
The early parts of the trail are great for children. Especially along the fire road and around the AT shelter. A more experience young hiker might be able to get down to the overlook, but any further than that would be extremely difficult. In addition to the steep descent/climb, the terrain is rocky and can be difficult to navigate.
