Overview
This is a difficult loop trail to Signal Knob in George Washington National Forest.
This trail goes by Three Top Mountain and Signal Knob Overlook.
The difficult rating on this trail does not fully do justice to just how difficult this hike is. Easily on of the most difficult hikes in the area. Hikers are rewarded, however, by magnificent views from the many peaks and overlooks. It gives hikers a chance to experience two of the areas many long trails: the Massenutten Trail, and Tuscarora Trail.
Taking Children
1/10. This hike is steep and involves a great deal of climbing. While the overlooks are nice, I would not recommend it for younger children.

Solo hike! This was one of the most difficult hikes I have ever done. I started at the left side of the parking lot and hiked the route clockwise. I liked going that way because the climb was steep at the beginning while I was fresh. The views were great, one small waterfall and seeing the TV station/tower was pretty cool. I went while the mountain laurel was blooming and it was a sea of white blossoms! Definitely take plenty of water (I ran through almost 100oz) and hiking poles. Lots of rock scrambles but the trail is well marked.

Signal Knob loop
Great loop hike only about 90 minutes from DC.
Relatively few stream crossings, all pretty easy. If the water level is low you won't even get your feet wet.
Uphill climb getting to Signal Knob is a good workout to get started. Once you pass the TV radio towers on your right, just ahead are a few rocks great for perching on to stop for lunch. Good views into West Virginia when the weather is clear.
I like this route counterclockwise. After you hit Signal Knob you walk along a fire road for about two miles. It's steep but downhill goes pretty fast. Going up would be both boring and hard.
Overall well-marked trail, good views, good workout.
