Billy Goat Trail (section B)
Overview
This is a easy loop trail in Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. It is officially Section B of the Billy Goat Trail.
The Billy Goat Trail consists of three loops running along the Potomac River. This is Section B (the middle section) which is one of the less difficult portions. Don't worry though, it still features plenty of river views and mini rock scrambles (though nothing like the significantly more difficult A section).
Getting Started
Park across from Old Angler's Inn on MacArthur Blvd. Walk down to the canal, cross the bridge and turn left on the canal towpath. Walk downstream about 50 yards. The upstream trailhead is signed. Dogs on leash are allowed. The footing is tough in places and the trail gets very close to the Potomac River. The trail is a semi-circle and returns to the canal towpath for the hike back to your car.
Check https://www.nps.gov/choh/index.htm for current conditions. Because of flood damage to the trail, as of Nov. 1, 2019 the trail is official closed.
Taking Children
This is a fun hike for younger children with some rocks on which to play and plenty of time near and overlooking the water.
