Freel Peak via Tahoe Rim Trail
Overview
This difficult out-and-back trail passes Armstrong Pass and Freel Pass on its way to the summit of Freel Peak in Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. At 10,843 feet, Freel Peak is the tallest in the Lake Tahoe basin, with views of Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness, and the expansive high desert of Nevada.
The first mile climbs Armstrong Pass, where the trail meets up with the Tahoe Rim Trail. Another 3 miles places you atop Freel Pass where the steep climb to Freel Peak begins. From here, travel along the northwest ridge for an additional mile until reaching the summit. On top, you will be rewarded with stunning views all around, along with the nearby Jobs Sister and Jobs Peak. Ambitious hikers can continue along to these two peaks to complete so-called Tahoe Triple Crown.
Getting Started
The trailhead is located roughly 3.5 miles up Willow Creek Road off Highway 89 near Hope Valley. The gravel road is tough in some sections, so it is advised to take a 4WD or AWD vehicle with decent clearance. There are no bathrooms at the trailhead, but plenty of parking and dispersed camping along the road.
Taking Children
Although possible, be wary of taking children on this hike, unless they are accustomed to both high-mileage days and high-altitude hiking. Also consider the elevation gain (2,500 feet) when bringing children.
