Went on a warm January day with thankfully a nice patchy cloud cover. The park is very well kept. There are several park maps, lots of signs, and three pit toilets on the main route. Parking seems to have enough space for up to 20 maybe cars. The trail is not super exciting as it is a fire road. But the nature, the huge basalt boulders, the views, and a few well placed information stands make the walk engaging. Great views in all directions from the Wright Peak, and a fun post with directions to notable peaks. Most of them are in the line of sight - though I am not sure about Mt. Whitney and Mt. Shasta (and Mount Tam for that matter). I could see what looks like Mt. Lassen and even Mount Diablo was visible pretty well. The private plane wreckage from 1970 is strikingly right on the trail close to the summit. I did not go to Howard Peak. A girl I met went to Buckingham Peak first and said that the trees obscure the clear view of the lake and the panorama.

While the trail itself is rather boring (you're mostly walking up a graded dirt road), the sites along the way are super interesting. Lots of canyon oaks, an old homestead from the 1800s, plane crash site, and some historic signage too. The fire observation tower at the summit is active, and if rangers are present they might give you a tour.
