Chestnut Mtn.
This hike starts at the Chestnut Mtn. firing range located just north of the junction of the Sugar Valley/Hwy 136 junction. Park your vehicle at the parking lot of the firing range and set off afoot on a Forest Service road, which you can follow for almost as many miles as you please as it wends its way through remote mountain country. The surface is friendly (think the average Forest Service road), and the climb(s) I would classify as easy to moderately strenuous.
This road is not generally well known or travelled, offering welcome respite from the crowds usually associated with more popular hiking venues. At about 3.7 miles the major service road enters a wide turn around, but continues to your left as a lesser (and muddier) track. This offers a good turn back for those who would prefer to keep their boots dry!!
