Dog Trail to Burnstarse Falls, Castle Crags Wilderness, California
Dogs are not allowed in Castle Crags State Park, but they are allowed in the adjacent Castle Crags Wilderness Area which is administered by the Shasta-Trinity National Forests. The Dog Trail starts just outside of the wilderness area and climbs to a junction with the Pacific Crest Trail. (The beginning part of the trail has become eroded from lack of maintenance). From there go left to get to the falls (and to stay out of the park with your pup). Its a fairly easy hike, i.e. it is pretty flat once the PCT is reached. There are some good photo opportunities of the Crags, and the falls are pretty as they cascade down polished granite. Its a nice, short hike along I-5 that allows you and your dog to stretch your legs. It is a wilderness area so it is designated for hikers only. No ATVs, motorcycles, or mountain bikes are allowed. Also, the PCT does not allow horses.
