Mule Hill Trail in San Dieguito River Park
Pretty wildflower laden hike with lots of history. This piece of the San Dieguito River Park, also known as the Coast to Crest Trail consisted of the Mule Hill Historic Trail and the San Pasquale Valley Agricultural Preserve Trail. Mule Hill is where General Kearney and Kit Carson holed up after losing the Battle of San Pasquale Valley (bloodiest California battle in the Mexican-American War), eating their mules (thus the name) while being surrounded by the Californios that made up the Mexican Army. Eventually, Kit Carson and two others snuck through Mexican lines to get help, and Kearney’s troops were rescued.
